Review – The Contender

This movie isn’t easy to categorize. For the most part it’s a political thriller about the back-room games played in an attempt to get a female senator confirmed to the Vice Presidency against strong opposition armed with a host of dirty tricks. However, there are a few comedy elements in here as well. And in the end, when honesty, justice and integrity triumph inside the beltway, of course the thing just becomes a fantasy. The star-studded cast does a solid job with a solid script. In fact, the movie’s only serious fault is that it does tend to preach a bit, particularly when it comes to liberal political issues and the sanctity of the private lives of public officials.
