Review – Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

Part of me desperately wants to like this movie. There should be something comforting in the notion of a naïve, cornball rube triumphing over graft and corruption based solely on the strength of his moral convictions. But in the world we live in, the land beyond Watergate, the realm of the Military-Industrial Complex, it’s just impossible to believe in stuff like this. Though some regard this production as a finest-moment point for both Frank Capra and Jimmy Stewart, I’d steer that honor toward It’s a Wonderful Life.
